Flower of the Abyss
2017 – 2024 · India ink on paper, acrylic paint on canvas
"Flower of the Abyss investigates repetitive bio-morphic mark-making as a psychological mechanism for survival, translating trauma, emotional isolation, and neurodivergent obsession into structured visual environments of resilience."
Originating in 2017 during a profound period of emotional crisis and trauma, Flower of the Abyss documents an ongoing personal and psychological pilgrimage. Deprived of formal academic art training within a low-resource educational infrastructure in El Tejar, Chimaltenango, the artist turned to the most accessible materials — standard paper, India ink, and basic acrylics — to build a singular visual vocabulary from scratch. Beginning with a single letter-sized mandala draft, the practice evolved into an obsessive, therapeutic impulse: drawing and painting repetitive botanical geometries day and night. Flower of the Abyss frames the simple motif of the flower not as mere decoration, but as an assertion of existence — a small, definitive victory against hopelessness. Through obsessive seriality and labor-intensive lineation, the collection transforms personal vulnerability into an immersive, universal universe of mental health advocacy and human recovery.
